This year 19 HWIS students attended Harvard Model United
Nations Conference (HMUN) in Beijing, from March 20-23. These students had to
work hard to prepare themselves for the fast-paced and challenging atmosphere
of the conference. Over 1000 students from many countries gathered to model the
United Nations structure, debating topics in such as the civil war in Syria,
the spread of HIV/AIDS, and the prevalence of illegal drug trafficking.
Our students did an excellent job of adjusting to the demands
of the conference. Educationally the experience requires research, careful
listening and note taking, formal English for speaking and writing, and
cross-cultural awareness both in meeting and understanding delegates from other
countries.
In addition, they made new friends, enjoyed Beijing, and
had an experience to last a lifetime.
