CAS
Creativity, action, service (CAS) is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. It is one of the three essential elements in every student’s Diploma Programme experience. It involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows.
Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.

CAS enables students to enhance their personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning. At the same time, it provides an important counterbalance to the academic pressures of the rest of the Diploma Programme. A good CAS programme should be both challenging and enjoyable, a personal journey of self discovery. Each individual student has a different starting point, and therefore different goals and needs, but for many their CAS activities include experiences that are profound and life changing.
For student development to occur, CAS should involve:
1. Real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
2. Personal challenge—tasks must extend the student and be achievable in scope
3. Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing progress, reporting
4. Reflection on outcomes and personal learning.

Community and Services for MYP
Community and Service
All our students are members of various communities such as family, school, Changchun and the world. This Area of Interaction encourages students to become responsible citizens within these environments by helping them to consider three questions:
How do we live in relation to each other?
How can I help others?
How can I contribute to the Community?
The Programme:
The Community and Service programme at Howard International School involves three key elements: Awareness: What is a community? How are communities similar and different? What is my role in the community? How can I make a difference? Involvement and Service: It is hoped that increased awareness of community needs and personal strengths will lead to a greater willingness to respond to these needs in a responsible and altruistic manner. Reflection: A vital part of the community and service programme helping the students’ personal development and assisting the awareness process. At HWIS students are asked to record all their service activities in their Community & Service log book to reflect on engaged experiences in detail for each time.

Today was the Christmas Market. Last night, Sarah, Lea, Carolina, Sofie and I went to Charne's house to prepare for the market. For about four hours, we were baking and making arts and crafts. We baked almost a hundred of cupcakes, and some people helped us by giving us their baked goods to sell. We bought lots of candles and decorated them, by painting and also made Christmas cards. I had to catch taxi and go back home at nine but it was worth it.
In Christmas market, we had separate table for bake sale, and arts and crafts. I was in the arts and craft table, and I was there for all four hours. We had our donation box in front so people could donate as well. One person donated 500RMB in an envelope which surprised us. We also got a lot of Christmas boxes, and I was truly surprised at how people were willing to help others. Sometimes there were letters as well, which made me smile. In total, we earned 3153 RMB.
This was a new experience for me, and it was a big success! I felt so proud of myself today.

This Saturday was the Christmas market which was a great opportunity for us to get a lot of money for the Little Angels project. As I already wrote before we sold the calendars which I bought in Germany and all of them got sold. Other things that we sold we prepared on Friday night. We spent about six hours baking many cupcakes and cookies. We also tried to create some art crafts in order to sell those but this didn't really work out as we planned it because we obviously were not very good as art crafts. Sadly we did not sell much of the art crafts which we of course expected but we sold some of the candles which Eunchae painted. But anyway we made a lot of money thanks to the great help of Carolina and her mum who made a huge amount of ginger cookies, to Desiree who baked a cake and my mum who made a big amount of waffle dough and baked a cake as well. On the actual Christmas market we then finally made a lot of money about 3000 RMB. We were able to sell all of the baked goods thanks to our great selling skills. All in all I think the day was a great success for the project.

Last week Friday we organized a bake sale in our school. We baked ourselves but we also asked teachers to help us and at the end we got about 1000 RMB which I think is a good start for the project but we need a lot more money to the poor people because they obviously don't have any. We also started working for the Christmas market. We wrote an e-mail to inform people about the donations which include Christmas boxes and cloth donations. I also translated it to German and we sent the e-mail to the German parents so we get even more donations.
I also bought things in Germany which we can sell at the Christmas to make even more money.

This week, we went to the gym and Mr. Bob opened the door for us. Sara and I pumped the balls again and I felt as if there were more balls than last week. I also put a few shuttlle cocks in their boxes and when we were done, we played some games. Helping out in the gym is a good activity because we become stronger by pumping balls with air and we learn to collaborate with others too. We were happy to be helping in the gym and we felt good doing this activity.

We have showed the video to the audience and they were laughing. It was quite a successful video and we had fun showing it to the audience. This video and performance has reminded us that all of us are from very different cultures, but we are working together as if we are all the same. All of us enjoyed making that funny video and all of us learned that even though we are different we can work together and create a great outcome.

Our performance, which was a video that we all created together as a group, was a bit complicated at first which was thinking about what we should do... But the performance itself went great/ awesome everybody loved it. At the end, they all were very happy. I really loved it!!!!! My goal and value to this was to have it not to simple and for everybody to like it. What I learned from this activity was if you work as a group, agree all as a group to the theme you can accomplish anything that you want. I can apply in life to this great.

I noticed that we did a good job on the movie.
I think i was involved a lot in this activity.
I think that it was a good idea. I also think it was a successful project because we finished on time and made it funny.
I did this so we can make a laugh, we also worked a lot on this activity and to explain what UN day was.
I think this has some value because we worked a lot on this activity.
I learnt that can work together a lot.

I had a lot of fun preparing the video with the whole class, there was lots of laughter, ideas, opinions, caring, open- minded, but best of all we all worked together the main representation of U.N day. At the same time it was very hard to finish it during C&A time because Lia and Justus have Spanish as a language B. , that's why we had to use some of our lunch time to work on parts were we all come up together. Sadly, I wasn't there during the performance... But my classmates have told me that people loved it they clapped they laughed they enjoyed the video.

At first, I actually didn't know why I should do this. But now, I know what and how this helps people. I think this is very vital and important job to do. We decided where, when and how and what to collect during C&S. Maybe this helps even the teachers to put the right things in the bin and also the students. We, MYP1 learned that working together with cooperation is better than doing only by yourself. To me, I think this is a great activity to do. I hope I can do well in C&S.

We gave trash signs to put on the trash can for each classroom. We made the signs in the second floor office and we laminated and cut them out. Brown for cans, Yellow for bottles and green for paper. Me and Dustin went to the third floor and gave all the teachers who wanted the signs. We are doing this to tell the teachers to put the recyclable things in the right container. We are trying to tell this to the school.

I have read books with Stephen twice since this activity started. Stephen reads books and I would correct the words that he read wrong and doesn't know. After reading a book, we played word game. He tells me one word in a book and I find the word. While reading the book, I sometimes ask what's going to happen. And when he wants to draw something about the book, he drew the characters. If a book is hard and has many hard words, he asks me to read. He wanted to make a paper book of a book called'magic pot' but we didn't have time so we promised to make it next week. I really like reading with kids in K2. They are really cute. I felt really good when he told me to come and sit with him and when he told his teacher that I’m his best friend.

I read with Hanna and Emily. We read the Goldilocks and the 3 bears and wrote the title on a little whiteboard and tried to read the title by separating the words into little words. For example, "gold" "i" "locks" so they could read big words by themselves. Then we read the whole book together!
