The English Immersion Programme (E.I.P.)

 

 

To accommodate students who are beginning English language learners, the school designed an English Immersion Programme to equip students with Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) as well as introduce them to academic language, referred to as Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Students in the EIP receive intensive lessons in English and join the mainstream for PE, Art/Music and Information Technology. The hope is that these students will leave the E.I.P. after three months and join the rest of the students on the I.B. Programme.

Criterion A: Oral Communication

At the end of the unit, the student will beable to:

·         pronounce 200-300 sight words

·         respond to greetings

·         exchange personal information

·         describe family members and answer simple questions about them

·         exchange conversations in public settings (i.e. hospitals, restaurants, etc.)

·         interact in a classroom environment

·         interact extemporaneously

 

Criterion B: Visual Interpretation

At the end of the unit, the student will be able to:

·         describe, exchange feelings, opinions and /or wishes about self and others

·         describe their family

·         describe appearances

·         explain directions and navigate a map

 

Criterion C. Reading Comprehension

At the end of the unit, the student will be able to:

·         read grade level stories

·         to identify main characters

·         identify simple plot elements

·         identify different story types

·         identify characteristics of a story

·         assign/identify character traits

·         use context clues to define vocabulary

 

 

Criterion D. Writing

At the end of the unit, the student will be able to:

·         write personal characteristics

·         write simple stories

·         write detailed information pertaining to their daily routines

·         describe places, people, things

·         use simple and complex sentences

·         identify parts of a sentence

·         use conjunctions appropriately

·         develop logic in basic writing
